What is tteok guk? Tteok-guk is a savory soup made with beef stock and tteok (korean rice cakes) with egg, seaweed, green onions, and black pepper garnishes. Why is it eaten on new years day? The dish's white color signifies purity and cleanliness - a fresh start for the new year. The round, coin-like shape of the tteok (Korean rice cakes) resembles Korea's old coin currency, yeopjeon which symbolizes wealth and prosperity to Koreans.
